2022 NBA Draft profile: Bennedict Mathurin – NBA.com

From: Arizona

Measurables: 6-7, 195 pounds

Key 2021-22 stats: 17.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 76.4 FT percentage, 36.9 three-point percentage

NBA.com consensus mock draft position: 7 (June 6 update, previously was 8)

The Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2021-22, Bennedict Mathurin is a late-bloomer with a unique background, having grown up in Montreal and being of Haitian descent. Mathurin considered entering the 2021 draft after averaging 10.8 points as an Arizona freshman, but returned to the Wildcats in order to work on improving his stock in the eyes of NBA scouts. That decision appears to have paid off in a big way, as he rocketed up mock drafts. He continues to gain momentum even at this late stage of the pre-draft process, climbing NBA.com’s consensus mock draft survey.

As Pistons.com noted a week ago, “Mathurin looks at least like a 3-and-D player and potentially more than that. … Mathurin has arguably the best combination of size, athleticism and 3-point shooting – and a track record of production – among lottery candidates. Mathurin was a consistently good player as a sophomore and got better as the season unfolded, a player clearly on an upward trajectory.”

DRAFT RANGE

Based on prominent mock drafts at least, Mathurin will still be on the board at pick No. 7 (Portland), but several sites have the Trail Blazers using that mid-lottery slot to select the shooting guard. A handful of others have Mathurin going to New Orleans at No. 8 overall, or the next spot to San Antonio. Among the dozen mock drafts polled by NBA.com, none have Mathurin dropping further than the 11th choice (New York).

PRO PLAYER COMPARISONS

Buddy Hield, Caris LeVert, Victor Oladipo or Terrence Ross?

In a Twitter poll, it was a photo finish between Ross (32.6 percent of votes) and Oladipo (31.5 percent). Ross has been one of the NBA’s premier instant-offense reserves throughout his 10-year career, while Oladipo has filled an array of roles but was All-NBA third team in 2018. Scorer and slasher LeVert received 18.5 percent of votes, just ahead of Hield’s 17.4.
