SETTING THE SCENE
The Cleveland State men’s basketball program has its eyes set on its second straight Horizon League Championships, but in order to repeat the Vikings are going to have to close out the 2021-22 regular-season campaign on the road, beginning with a Monday night matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne. CSU enters the contest in first place in the Horizon League as the Vikings currently sit 17-6 overall and 13-3 in conference play. It will be the first of what is five straight road contests to close out the season. Tonight’s game will feature Senior Night for the Purdue Fort Wayne program. The two teams have met once already this year, a 90-81 victory back on Thursday, Dec. 30.
A WIN ON MONDAY WOULD…
Begin a new two-game winning streak for the CSU program…Would be the Vikings fifth straight win over Purdue Fort Wayne…Keep Cleveland State on the top of the Horizon League standings with just four games left to play (all on the road)…Raise the Vikings above a .500 record on the road (currently sit at 3-3)…Improve Dennis Gates to 7-1 overall against the Purdue Fort Wayne program.
THE CLEVELAND STATE/PURDUE FORT WAYNE SERIES
Monday night’s game will be the 11th meeting between the two Horizon League programs. Cleveland State enters the matchup 8-2 all-time against Purdue Fort Wayne and the Vikings have won their past four games against the Mastodons. The interesting thing about the matchup? These two programs have now played each other eight times since 2020, the most contests between the same two schools in the NCAA during that time period.
LAST TIME OUT…
The Cleveland State men’s basketball program celebrated its Senior Day in a big way as the Vikings cruised to an 83-45 victory in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Wolstein Center on this past Saturday afternoon.
– D’Moi Hodge led the charge for the Vikings as the senior finished with 19 points (on 8-of-11 from the field), in just 23 minutes of play. He also added five boards, two assists and a game-high five steals.
– Fellow senior Torrey Patton was right behind with 18 points of his own and he also chipped in six rebounds and three helpers.
– The senior contributions continued as Broc Finstuen scored 10 and grabbed seven boards.
– Cleveland State led for 39:10 of the contest.
– CSU has won seven of its past nine games, all in conference play.
– The Vikings improved to 14-3 in the Wolstein Center and will embark on a five-game road trip to end the regular season. The stretch will all take place over the next 13 days, which begins against Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday.
– CSU improved to 7-4 all-time and has now won its past six games against IUPUI.
– On Senior Day, the graduating group combined for 75 of the team’s 83 points (90.3 percent).
– The city of Cleveland really showed out for the team’s final home contest of the regular season with 4,002 in attendance. It was the largest crowd of the year and the highest-attend game since Feb. 2, 2015.
VIKINGS ALL OVER THE NATIONAL RANKS
CSU enters Monday’s conference contest with its name all over the national rankings:
– 9th in the nation with 17.3 assist per game (tops in Horizon)
– 30th in NCAA DI with a shooting clip of 47.5 percent from the field on the year (tops in Horizon)
– 32nd in the nation with an average of 8.6 steals per contest (fourth in Horizon)
– 32nd in the country with an average of 15.70 forced turnovers per game (second in Horizon)
– Also 32nd in NCAA with 397 total assists on the season (tops in Horizon)
– 33rd in the country in assists/turnover ratio at 1.35 (tops in Horizon)
– 45th with a turnover margin of 2.9 (tops in Horizon)
– 47th in nation with 73.9 win-lost percentage (tops in Horizon)
– Also ranked in the Top-100 in scoring offense (75.6 PPG – 73rd), three-point field goal defense (.312 – 78th), field goal percentage defense (.413 – 80th), free throws attempted (467 – 87th) and scoring margin (7.0 – 91st)
#HLMBB PLAY OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS
Throughout the last two years, Cleveland State has combined for a 29-7 regular season record against league opponents, including a 18-4 mark when playing at the Wolstein Center. If you include #HLMBB Tournament play, the Vikings have won 22 of their last 27 matchups entering Monday night’s game against Purdue Fort Wayne.
NO, NO, NO…
Deante Johnson became the seventh Viking all-time to reach 100 career blocked shots, finishing with 102 after notching three in the Vikings win over the Panthers this past Sunday. On the season, Johnson has a team-best 29 total blocked shots, and ranks third among #HLMBB student-athletes with his average of 1.4 blocks per contest.
COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR POLL
For the fifth straight week, Cleveland State was ranked in the Top-25 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. The Vikings jumped up five spots to No. 13 overall in the latest edition of the poll. CSU is one of three Horizon League teams to crack into the Mid-Major Top-25 this week (Oakland – 16, Wright State – RV).
