Michigan basketball already brought in one big transfer in Princeton point guard Jaelin Llewellyn, a former top 100 recruit. Though it lost point guard Frankie Collins in the process, the Wolverines could manage to get a wing — which could be beneficial if either Caleb Houstan or Moussa Diabate decide to stay in the NBA draft.
That wing? Former high-profile recruit Emoni Bates, who pledged to Michigan State before flipping to Memphis.
Certainly, there’s some baggage that comes with Bates, but Michigan is apparently doing its due diligence. Head coach Juwan Howard was spotted with him soon after he hit the transfer portal, and it appears that Bates is interested in potentially coming to Ann Arbor, he told On3’s Joe Tipton.
After receiving interest from double-digit programs, the former No. 1 overall recruit tells On3 he has narrowed his focus to six schools, in no particular order: Michigan, Arkansas, Seton Hall, DePaul, Louisville, and Eastern Michigan.
In a separate interview with Tipton, Bates shared his thoughts on the Michigan vs. MSU rivalry, one where he took rooting interest in the green and white when he was growing up ($). If he were to end up at Michigan, that would, obviously, turn on its head.
I’m not really going to let it faze me. The way I look at it, I’m just going to go to college wherever I feel is best for me. No matter which school it is.
At the moment, Bates has not shared his timeline for announcing his future school of choice.
