Leeds and Burnley write to Premier League over Everton finances

Leeds and Burnley have written to the Premier League over a belief Everton seriously breached financial rules.

Both clubs wrote a letter to the governing body asking whether the Premier League investigated Everton, who lost £371.8 million over the last three years, what the outcome of the investigation was and if they intend to impose any sanctions.

Premier League clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million over three years as part of the profit and financial sustainability rules. COVID-related losses can be written off.

FA issue warning to clubs over pitch invasions

The Football Association has warned clubs they are at risk of sterner disciplinary action after a number of recent matches were marred by pitch invasions.

Several recent matches in the Premier League and the EFL have seen pitch invasions, with some turning ugly amid clashes between fans and club personnel.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe warned a pitch invasion could soon result in “a tragedy” while the Professional Footballers’ Association called on football and police authorities to take a tougher stance on fans.

And, in a new statement published on Friday afternoon, the FA said it was “very concerned” by the increase in pitch invasions and called on clubs to “prevent” them from occurring.

Kylian Mbappe: PSG make short-term contract offer after Real Madrid talks

Paris Saint-Germain have made a short-term contract offer to Kylian Mbappe as they make their latest play to keep him at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe’s current contract expires in the summer, allowing him to move for free after June 30.

On Monday, The Athletic reported Mbappe had agreed personal terms with Real, but Paris Saint-Germain were still trying to convince him to change his mind. The 23-year-old had not signed paperwork with Real.

PSG sources insisted to The Athletic that Real’s confidence that he would move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer was misplaced. PSG have been open for the last year to a shorter-term extension than the five-year deal they would have initially preferred and the latest proposal is understood to be a three-year contract offer.

Breaking – Harry Kane: Tottenham sweat over striker’s availability before Norwich game

Harry Kane pulled out of a scheduled appearance on Friday because he was feeling unwell, raising fears over his availability for Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League clash with Norwich City this weekend.

Kane, 28, was due to open an exhibition about his career at the Museum of London on Friday.

But The Athletic understands the England captain pulled out of the event because he felt unwell.

Kane’s sickness raises fears over his availability ahead of a vital Premier League match for Spurs on Sunday.

Todd Cantwell to make Norwich return after Bournemouth do not take up option to buy midfielder

Todd Cantwell will return to Norwich City after Bournemouth did not take up their option to buy the on-loan midfielder.

Cantwell, 24, left for the south coast in January for a loan spell at Scott Parker’s side, having struggled for minutes in the Premier League during the first half of Norwich’s season.

He will not, however, remain in the top flight with Bournemouth next season, who were promoted after finishing second in the Championship.

Cantwell played 12 times for Bournemouth but had made only one start since March. He also missed out on Parker’s final four match-day squads.

Mike Dean, Martin Atkinson and Jon Moss handed low-key final Premier League games

Referees Mike Dean, Martin Atkinson and Jon Moss will take charge of their final matches this weekend.

All three officials have been left off the most high-profile games of the weekend as Atkinson will be at Crystal Palace vs Manchester United, Dean will officiate Chelsea vs Watford, and Moss will be the man in the middle for Leicester City vs Southampton.

Dean, Atkinson and Moss have taken charge of 1,294 Premier League games between them.

Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have been appointed as referees for Manchester City and Liverpool’s final games of the season as the Premier League title is decided.

Norwich’s Dean Smith: ‘I don’t care about the top four battle’

Norwich City head coach Dean Smith has said he does not care who finishes in the top four this season — so long as his side beat Tottenham Hotspur at Carrow Road on Sunday.

Spurs travel to Norwich knowing that anything but defeat will virtually guarantee them a place in the Champions League next season.

Their north London rivals Arsenal, who host Everton at the same time on Sunday, trail them by two points and 15 goals, meaning Mikel Arteta’s side need a big favour from Smith’s.

But Smith has said he has no interest in the race for Champions League football next season and is more interested in helping his relegated Norwich side leapfrog Watford on the final day.

Ancelotti urges Real Madrid fans to give Bale deserved send-off

Carlo Ancelotti has called on Real Madrid fans to recognise Gareth Bale’s contributions to the club.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his side’s final La Liga game against Real Betis on Friday evening, the 62-year-old manager said: “Everyone knows that Bale’s contract is ending and that he says goodbye to Real Madrid this year.

“It’s not important if he plays.

“What’s important is Bale is a part of the history of this club. He’ll always be in the memories of Real Madrid fans.”

Breaking: Marco Rose leaves Borussia Dortmund one year after joining club

Marco Rose has left Borussia Dortmund just a year after joining the club from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Rose’s Borussia Dortmund finished second in Bundesliga, eight points behind champions Bayern Munich.

They were knocked out of the German Cup by second-division side St Pauli in the round of 16 stage and dropped down to the Europa League after finishing behind Ajax and Sporting Lisbon in their Champions League group.

Dortmund were then knocked out of the Europa League by eventual finalists Rangers.

The 45-year-old held talks with chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke, consultant Matthias Sammer and sporting directors Michael Zorc and Sebastian Kehl on Thursday.

The rise of pitch invasions: ‘It’s probably only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt’

Calls are increasing for reviews of security inside football grounds.

“We’re massively concerned,” John Mousinho, chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), tells The Athletic. “It’s been a worry of mine for a while. Although nothing too serious has happened yet — and I think we’ve got away with another one — it’s probably only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt. We really have to do something about this. That type of behaviour is unacceptable.”

Phil Buckingham reports.
