KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The IPL media rights have been sold for a cumulative fee of INR 107.5 crore (TV and Digital).
  • The per-match revenue puts the IPL second on the list, only behind the NFL.
  • The likes of NBA, EPL, etc. slot behind the T20 cricket league in the list.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle has taken the cricketing world by storm. Though there aren’t many overseas bidders, the Package A (for TV) and Package B (for Digital) have been sold for mind-blowing costs.
Even when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said that the IPL has taken over the English Premier League in terms of per-game broadcast valuation, he wasn’t wrong.

The BCCI fetched a whopping Rs 23,575 crore (Rs 57.5 crore per game) for TV rights while Package B went for Rs 20,500 crore (Rs 50 crore per game). The figures have seen the T20 league sit second in the standings, not too far away from the No. 1 spot.

Top sports leagues in the world in terms of per-game cost (including both TV and digital):

  1. NFL: USD 17 million
  2. IPL: USD 13.4 million
  3. English Premier League: USD 11 million
  4. Major League Beaseball: USD 11 million
  5. NBA: USD 2 million

— Figures as per Times of India“At present, a National Football League game costs a broadcaster about $17 million, which is the highest for any sports league. That’s followed by the English Premier League, at $11 million, and the Major League Baseball figure, too, is roughly the same. In the last five-year cycle, we got $9 million from one IPL game. This time, going by the present minimum base price that we have set, BCCI will get paid $12 million per IPL match. That’s a giant leap for Indian cricket on the world stage. We will be just behind NFL,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had earlier told The Indian Express in an interview.

A total of 7 companies said to have competed for the media rights of IPL for the 2023-2027 cycle. While Star India is said to have the media rights for Television, the digital rights went to Viacom 18.
